St Ambrose Barlow Catholic Primary School

Year 5

Miss Pelazza, together with Miss Traynor, would like to welcome you to Year 5. Our teaching assistant is Mr Turner. It is our goal to provide all children with an educationally challenging, yet fun, experience in our classroom.

Year 5 is a challenging and exciting year for the class. We are now in Upper Key Stage 2 and are senior members of our school community. We will be given extra responsibilities around the school and will be expected to act as positive role models to the younger children at all times.

At St. Ambrose Barlow School our faith permeates all we do and the words of our mission statement form the basis of daily school life: 'With St Ambrose Barlow as our guide and Jesus at our side we are all learning to live, love and work together'.

In addition to regular participation at Mass, together with other services at Church, we will be given the opportunity to conduct and lead our own prayer services in class. Our altar, which is dressed in accordance with the colours of the liturgical calendar is the focal point of our classroom. The altar has a 'prayer box,' where we are given the opportunity to privately place our own petitions. We also have the opportunity to take home a prayer bag for private and family devotion at home.

We have Maths and English lessons every day, usually in the mornings; in these lessons we split into groups and work with either Miss Pelazza or Miss Traynor. In the afternoons, we have subjects such as RE, Art and Design, History, Geography, Computing, Music, Design and Technology, French, PE and Science.

In Year 5, we receive both English and Maths homework each week, which will include spellings and times-tables revision. Homework is set on a Monday and Friday and must be handed in on time. This will be made clear on the instruction sheet in our homework books. In Year 5, we are encouraged to become more independent and organised when completing homework and recording our daily reading. Our parents are asked to sign our Reading Record each night to ensure we make good progress. Occasionally homework will be set which covers other subjects or themes.

Our Curriculum Overview will provide more detailed information on topics, activities and trips planned throughout the year.

We enjoy keeping fit during PE.
We especially enjoy improving our tennis skills with Alex, our tennis coach.

It is great to welcome Miss Traynor into Year 5 and we were quick to share our news.
Everyone had lots of good ideas about the qualities needed for a School Councillor.

Congratulations to all the candidates, but especially to the two classmates who were elcted.
We all understand the importance of drinking lots of water – it helps us learn.
