St Ambrose Barlow Catholic Primary School

Year 2

Welcome to Year 2, where we are continuing our exciting learning journey at St Ambrose Barlow. We are very excited to be the oldest children in Key Stage One now, and we take our responsibility of being role models to the younger children very seriously.

Our teachers this year are Miss Newman and Miss Murphy and out teaching assistant is Mrs O. We do lots of our learning as a whole class, but we also enjoy splitting into two groups, one with Miss Newman and one with Miss Murphy, three mornings a week.

Our classroom is upstairs and we have our own cloakroom and toilets. We have a bright, sunny classroom with lots of displays which are full of prompts which help us to do brilliantly with our work and achieve our very best. We take great pride in our learning environment and we work hard as a team to keep it tidy and organised.

Our class altar is a main focus in our classroom and we change it throughout the year to celebrate Feast days and special times in the Church’s year. Jesus is very much a presence in our classroom and we always try to follow his example. We take our school values and virtues very seriously and we try to live out these values in all that we do inside and outside the classroom.

We usually have RE, literacy, maths, geography and history in the morning and enjoy science, art, design and technology, computing, PE and music in the afternoon.

Four times a week we work in our phonic groups. In Year 2 we consolidate phase 5 and work through phase 6. We are becoming very independent and resilient learners and we love a challenge! We especially love working in our Maths No Problem books and moving onto the mastery questions that our teachers set to challenge and stretch us. We are developing excellent problem solving and reasoning skills!

We are a very creative class and we like making links between different areas of the curriculum in our lessons. We love combining art and RE, recreating special pieces of religious art. You should see our masterpieces!

We go on exciting class trips in Year 2. Last year the children had great learning opportunities at Mount Pleasant farm and Aston Hall.
