Year 2
Curriculum Overview – Autumn
The first lesson in RE when children return in September focuses on our school saint, St Ambrose Barlow. After this, we have a lesson on our Mission Statement, then a lesson on our class saint, and finally a lesson on our Values and Virtues for the half term. In RE, children cover the first two branches of ‘Discerning Disciples’ which encompass Creation and Covenant, and Prophecy and Promise. Our class mass is in October of Autumn term.
In Literacy, Year 2 read ‘The Hodgeheg’ and ‘The Pirates Next Door.’ Their writing focuses on non-chronological reports, story writing, and instructions. During November we focus on Non-Fiction texts.
In Maths, a combination of ‘Maths No Problem’ and ‘White Rose’ is used and the units covered include place value, calculations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We also look at measurement of mass and length.
During Science, Year 2 learn about Everyday Materials.
In PE, Year 2 play Tennis and focus on their Team Building.
In History, Year 2 learn about the Great Fire of London.
Our Geography learning this year follow three strands: Locational, Europe and World Knowledge How Humans Impact On Our World – How our actions (the things we do) can change our planet and cause harm. How Our World Impacts On Humans – How Earth can cause us (people) harm. This is continued throughout the year.
In Art, Year 2 have the opportunity to explore the life and work of six key abstract artists (Mondrian, Rothko, Klee, Pollock, Delaunay and Kandinsky).
In DT, Year 2 will follow instructions on how to make different types of mechanisms, such as levers, wheels, and sliders.
Our Music lessons are taught by a music specialist.
During Computing, we look at IT around us and digital photography.
In RSHE, Year 2 learn about good and bad secrets and being unique.
Spring
In RE, children cover the third and fourth branch of Discerning Disciples’ which encompass. Galilee to Jerusalem and Desert to garden. Our class assembly takes place in March.
In Literacy, Year 2 read stories by the same author and write their own adventure story. They also read stories set on a farm and later in the term we do persuasive texts. We also have a week based on Shakespeare. In Guided Reading, Year 2 read Flat Stanley.
In Maths, a combination of ‘Maths No Problem’ and ‘White Rose’ is used and the units covered include statistics, money, fractions, and shape.
On Wednesday’s we go swimming at Fox Hollies. Year 2 also do invasion games and athletics.
In Computing, children learn about robot algorithms and pictograms.
Our Music lessons are taught by a music specialist.
In DT, children explore dips and dippers and make and design their own and in Art we explore the work of LS Lowry.
Children finish their learning on The Great Fire of London and begin to study Great Women. We also go on our trip this term related to our History topic.
During Science, Year 2 learn about exercise, hygiene, habitats, and food chains.
Summer
In RE, children cover the final two branches of Discerning Disciples which encompass To the ends of the Earth and Dialogue and encounter.
In Literacy we look at explanation texts and write our own about the seaside, we also write letters and learn the poem ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat,’ by Edward Lear. In Guided Reading, we read ‘The Owl who is Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson.
In Maths, a combination of ‘Maths No Problem’ and ‘White Rose’ is used and the units covered include time, volume, and 3D shape.
In PE, we do football taught by the coaches at Aston Villa. We also do gymnastics and dance.
Our Music lessons are taught by a music specialist.
In History, we finish our learning of Great Women and answer our enquiry question.
In Art, we look at sculptures and make our own out of recycled materials and in DT we use our sewing skills to make fabric faces.
In Computing, we will make our own music and programme quizzes.
During Science, children learn about scientists and inventors, plants, and biodiversity.
In RSHE, we learn about different communities as well as needs and wants.
